Harvesting the Right Bamboo at the Right Time

The process begins in managed bamboo forests, often located in regions of China where Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) thrives. Unlike traditional hardwoods, which can take 30 to 60 years to mature, bamboo reaches optimal harvest maturity in just five to seven years. This short growth cycle makes it a highly renewable raw material, but only if harvested correctly.

Trained field workers identify and cut only fully mature stalks, leaving younger shoots to continue growing. This selective harvesting ensures that the bamboo grove remains healthy and productive year after year. The culms (stalks) are typically cut at the base and trimmed to uniform lengths before being transported to the factory.

At this early stage, timing and moisture content are critical. Bamboo contains natural sugars and starches that can attract pests or cause mold if not processed quickly. Once delivered to the factory, the culms are promptly stripped of their outer skin and inner nodes, then sliced into thin strips.

Preparing the Strips: Boiling, Drying, and Sorting

The sliced bamboo strips undergo a boiling or steaming process to remove excess sugar, insects, and any remaining impurities. This step not only sterilizes the bamboo but also helps stabilize it by reducing its moisture content.

Depending on the desired final color, the strips may be treated further. Natural bamboo retains its pale, yellow-beige tone, while carbonized bamboo is heat-treated to achieve a darker, caramel-like hue. Carbonization reduces hardness slightly but appeals to customers seeking warmer tones.

After treatment, the strips are kiln-dried to a specific moisture level—usually between 6% and 9%. This drying phase is essential for dimensional stability, ensuring that the bamboo won't warp, crack, or swell after installation.

Building the Boards: Lamination and Strand Woven Construction

There are two main types of bamboo flooring construction: laminated (horizontal or vertical grain) and strand-woven.

  • Horizontal and vertical grain flooring is made by gluing strips side-by-side and stacking them in layers. The grain orientation affects the visual appearance: horizontal grain showcases the bamboo's nodes and natural patterns, while vertical grain offers a more uniform, linear look.

  • Strand-woven bamboo flooring involves shredding the bamboo into fibers, mixing them with adhesive, and pressing them under extreme heat and pressure. This process creates an ultra-dense composite material that is significantly harder than oak or maple.

For both types, the adhesive used is a key factor. Factories often rely on low-formaldehyde or formaldehyde-free resins to meet environmental standards like CARB Phase II, E1, or even E0. These adhesives must be strong enough to hold the bamboo together for decades while emitting minimal volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Precision Milling and Profiling

After pressing and curing, the bamboo boards are cut into flooring planks using high-precision machinery. Each plank is milled to exact dimensions for thickness, width, and length, and then profiled with tongue-and-groove or click-lock edges depending on the installation system.

At this stage, small defects such as splinters, cracks, or inconsistencies are removed manually or by automated defect scanners. Surface smoothness and flatness are also inspected to ensure a consistent finish across every batch.

Lacquering: Protection Meets Presentation

One of the final steps before packaging is the application of lacquer or polyurethane coatings. These finishes serve two purposes: they protect the bamboo from wear, moisture, and UV rays, and they provide the desired sheen—whether matte, satin, or glossy.

Most high-quality bamboo flooring receives between five and ten layers of UV-cured lacquer. Some factories also incorporate aluminum oxide into the top layers to enhance scratch resistance. Each layer is applied and cured in a controlled environment, ensuring uniformity and durability.

The lacquer process is closely monitored. Dust-free clean rooms, precision sprayers, and UV curing ovens work together to produce a flawless finish. The final result is a surface that can withstand years of foot traffic while maintaining its visual appeal.

Quality Control: From Factory Floor to Living Room

Throughout the manufacturing process, quality control teams are constantly testing and inspecting. Moisture meters, hardness testers, and dimensional scanners are just a few tools used to ensure consistency and performance.

Emission testing is also conducted regularly to verify that the adhesives and finishes comply with health and safety regulations. Boards are often subjected to simulated wear testing—such as abrasion, impact, and heat resistance—to confirm they meet product specifications.

Visual inspection remains one of the most important aspects of final quality control. Color matching, grain alignment, and surface clarity are examined plank by plank before packaging. Only after passing these checks are the boards boxed and labeled for shipment.
